France Football’s decision to abolish Ballon d’Or 2020 reaps the pros and cons. For the years, this award has been the legitimacy of the status of the best player in the world in a season.
In the 21st century, there are Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who dominated the award. Both won 11 trophies in the last 12 years, almost unrivalled.
Currently, Messi is the defending champion of the Ballon d’Or, which he won in December 2019. Unlike the previous years, now Messi can defend the title until 2021 later.
The cancellation of the Ballon d’Or did not stop fans from choosing the best players this season. There are dozens of candidates, but there are at least 5 names that should be eligible to compete and win the Ballon d’Or this year.
5. Kevin De Bruyne (Man City)
The best player in the Premier League this season, De Bruyne is not to blame even though Man City failed to defend their title. He appeared impressive since the beginning of the season. His performance at the Santiago Bernabeu when Man City beat Real Madrid was at an extraordinary level.
4. Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)
One of the most important players in the success of Madrid won La Liga, Benzema presents his best season during a career in Spain.
Despite having experienced a goal drought at the end of 2019, Benzema could close the season with 21 goals in the league.
3. Lionel Messi (Barcelona)
La Liga’s top scorer, top assist in La Liga history, and the player with the most goals contributed in this top 5 list. Then why is Messi only ranked third?
Yes, Barca closes the season without a trophy, which is a big failure. Even so, Messi still has a chance to lead his colleagues in the struggle in the race of the Champions League.
2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus)
Before the draw against Sassuolo last week, Ronaldo had scored or made assists in every Juventus match in Serie A in 2020, which guided Juve closer to reaching the Scudetto. Unfortunately, Juve failed to win the Coppa Italia, and left behind Lyon in the last 16 of the Champions League. That’s why Ronaldo can’t be number one.
1. Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich)
It seems that no player cares more than Lewandowski when the Ballon d’Or was officially cancelled. He performed very well since the start of the season. Even since January 2020, Lewandowski continues to improve his performance. He helped Bayern win two domestic titles and was a favourite of UCL.
