The Nepal national men’s football team is gearing up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, with a key match against their familiar rivals, Laos, scheduled for 12 October. This tournament served as a crucial preparation ahead of the SAFF Championship 2023, and Nepal hosted and won it.

Laos, currently ranked 186th in the FIFA rankings, and Nepal, ranked 175th, previously faced each other in the Prime Minister’s Three Nations Cup held in Nepal last March 2023. Nepal secured a 2-0 victory in the group stage and later won the title by defeating Laos 2-1 in the final.

Five days after the first leg, Nepal will travel to Laos for the second leg on the 17th. Depending on the aggregate results of the two legs, if Nepal advances the first qualifying stage, they will compete in Group H against strong teams such as the UAE, Bahrain, Yemen, and Sri Lanka.

Should they progress to the second stage, Nepal will enter the final stage, with a chance to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Nepal’s preparation for the match hasn’t been ideal, with the team struggling to find form. They recently played warm-up matches against different age group teams and had mixed results. Despite a 3-2 win against Tribhuvan Army last week, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Nepal Police Club.
