Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has expressed his belief that Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was deserving of the prestigious Ballon d’Or award last year which is 2022. Courtois enjoyed an exceptional 2021-22 campaign, playing a vital role in Real Madrid’s triumphs in La Liga and the Champions League.
Throughout the season, Courtois conceded only 46 goals in 52 matches across various competitions. He also kept an impressive 22 clean sheets, including one in the Champions League final against Liverpool. As a testament to his outstanding performances, he was honored with the Yashin Trophy, recognizing him as the best goalkeeper of the season.
However, it was Courtois’ teammate, Karim Benzema, who ultimately clinched the coveted Ballon d’Or. Benzema’s contributions were significant last year. He scored 44 goals and provided 15 assists in 46 matches for Real Madrid during the same season.
Guardiola opines that last year’s Ballon d’Or should have been awarded to Courtois. Looking ahead, the City manager suggests that his star striker, Erling Haaland, is a strong contender for this year’s award. Particularly if City can secure victory in the Champions League.
Manchester City recently secured a spot in the Champions League final by defeating Real Madrid 4-0 in a commanding performance. Guardiola shared his thoughts with reporters after the match, expressing his belief that Courtois would have been a deserving recipient of the Ballon d’Or 2022.
