SAFF announces inaugural Club Championship to take place in 2024

SAFF to host home and away Club Championship from 2024

The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) has announced that the inaugural SAFF Club Championship will take place in 2024, with the competition being held on a home and away-basis. The championship was originally planned to be held this year in Dhaka, but due to a lack of support from sponsors, it was postponed. The SAFF president, Kazi Salahuddin, has been advocating for a UEFA Champions League-style competition in the region for more than ten years.

During the SAFF Ordinary Congress in Dhaka, the executive committee made the decision to host the championship in principle. The tournament will feature two sides each from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, along with one side each from Pakistan, Nepal, and Bhutan. The details of the championship will be announced following discussions among the members of the associations.

In addition, the committee discussed the upcoming 14th SAFF Championship, which will take place in Bengaluru, India, from June 21 to July 4. As resolved in the last executive meeting, the committee invited teams outside the SAFF region, and they will postpone finding another team until May 15, 2023. It is important to note that Sri Lanka, a member of the SAFF, is currently suspended by FIFA.

List of SAFF Championship winners and their total titles:

  1. India – 8 titles (1993, 1997, 1999, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2021)
