SAFF Championship 2023 Group Stage Draw on May 21 in Bangalore
The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) has announced that the draw for the group stage of the SAFF Championship 2023 will take place in Bangalore on May 21. Seven teams have already been confirmed for the tournament, with the possibility of adding an eighth team until May 15.
However, due to the absence of Football Sri Lanka, who was sanctioned by FIFA on January 21, 2023, the championship will be missing a key team.
To increase the number of teams and make the event more competitive, Kuwait has been invited as a guest team. Additionally, another guest team is set to be announced soon for the SAFF 2023 Championship.
If an eighth team cannot be confirmed by the deadline, the tournament will proceed with just seven teams. Nevertheless, the SAFF is hoping for a competitive event, with the participation of top teams from the region.
SAFF Club Championship to be Held in 2024
The SAFF has also announced that the inaugural SAFF Club Championship will be held in 2024. The championship was originally scheduled for this year in Dhaka. Championship was postponed due to a lack of support from sponsors.
The SAFF president, Kazi Salahuddin, has advocated for a UEFA Champions League-style competition in the region for over ten years.
