Brazilian soccer legend Pelé dies at 82
During his 21-year career, he set a global record with 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country. He died at a Sao Paulo hospital where he had been getting treatment since November.
Pele, whose actual name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, had recently suffered from kidney and prostate problems. In September 2021, he was diagnosed with colon cancer.
A statement from Sao Paulo’s Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein a week before his death stated that Pele needed “more treatment related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions” due to the “progression” of his cancer.
Kely Nascimento, Pele’s daughter and family, spent the Christmas holidays by his bedside in the hospital. His daughter published this on Instagram: “Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.”
Pele was selected as Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000. Pele is the only player to have won the World Cup three times, taking home the trophy in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
